Flawed and over rated... but jack is brilliant! - Batman Reviews

The first installment of the series is flawed and over rated... but Jack turns in one of the most Oscar-worthy performances of the century in a film with an extraordinary vision and soundtrack. #1 - Tim Burton's malevolent interpretation of Gotham is genius, it influenced cinema from that point on to this day in an exponential capacity... but the film's evolution is labored to a critical fault by the fact that we have to watch Knox run around Gotham like a digresion prone lemming. Who cares? #2 - Batman (Keaton) is an excellent actor and turned in a strong performance... but is miscast. A younger and much taller Bruce/Batman was needed. Everyone including myself at one point said "Keaton was the best", but I really believe that is primarily because he was the first. Had Depp or even Kilmer been cast first the vast majority would probably say they were the best. Bob Kane's stated in Cinecsape (May 1995) that he appreciated Keaton but Kilmer was far better suited to play the role. Remember that Bruce Wayne is an athletic GQ-type who attracts women without effort in the comics... I really love Keaton's work but he is not exactly a sex symbol or over 6 foot or athletic when compared to others (specifically Kilmer). #3 - Killing The Joker. Do I really need to elaborate? Aside from the above, it is still the best film in the series and a groundbreaking film in a multi-disciplinary capacity. Long live Jack! The best Batman is yet to be made...
